Polar Kite runs after a short break of 30 days this afternoon in a fairly competitive looking Class 4 Handicap.

The five-year-old bay gelding ran well to win over today’s trip on his last start at Kempton and after only two starts on the all-weather is well worth chancing at decent odds.

Polar Kite did not have a great year in 2012 as he was beaten 30 lengths, 45 lengths and 33 lengths in a class 2 and two Class 3 Handicaps respectively. He was even tried over hurdles once, trailing in last in a Novices’ Listed event. After only four runs he ran in a Class 5 Claiming race at Kempton on 3 December and the drop down into Claiming company for the first time saw his form dramatically change. He was always travelling strongly before taking the lead 3 furlongs out and was in command inside the final furlong and always doing enough to hold on.

He runs over the same trip today and in four starts over 7 furlongs on the flat turf and on the all-weather Polar Kite has won twice and been placed once. He has only run at Wolverhampton once before when well beaten in November, although that race was over 1 mile 1 ½ furlongs and he was running in Class 3.

He is ridden by Barry McHugh who has not ridden him before. Barry appears to be riding well at the moment as although he has nor ridden a winner in the last 14 days he has four placed runners from just seven rides and rides plenty of winners for Polar Kite’s trainer Richard Fahey.

On the evidence of his form in 2012 Polar Kite is a risky proposition today. However, the form of his last run does give some hope. His form as a three-year-old in 2011 would make him the hot favourite for this race as he won two decent Class 3 Handicaps. He clearly has the ability to compete well at this level and even though there are a couple of potential improvers in the race a chance is taken that Polar Kite has rediscovered his winning form and if at anything approaching his best looks excellent value at 15/2.

I have been involved in racing for over 20 years – the highlight being when a 2yo I owned won first time out at Hamilton Park. I work full-time in the racing game spending my time writing, researching and on course as a paddock judge – you can learn more about a horse’s chances watching them in the pre-parade and parade rings than you might imagine."
