Born on 24 March, 1971, the son of former Swedish jockey Sven-Ake Johansson, Fredrik Johansson began his career in pony races at the age of seven.
In 1988, he turned his back on a possible career in football to join trainer Mikael Jacobsson and was champion apprentice in 1989 and 1990. He enjoyed his first major success on Nashville in the 1990 Swedish Criterium - the biggest juvenile contest in Sweden.
That year, he went on to win the first classic of his career, taking the Swedish 1,000 Guineas on Cheerleader. He has twice landed the German Derby, partnering Alderflug to an impressive victory in 2007 and following up this year aboard Wiener Walzer.
Sweden’s top rider is no stranger to Derby success, having secured four wins in the Swedish version and two apiece in the Danish and Norwegian equivalents. In 1997 he achieved the notable feat of partnering Valley Chapel to success in all three Scandinavian Derbys in the same season.
He has twice been Scandinavian champion jockey as well as leading rider in Sweden. His successes in Britain include a victory aboard Lochridge in the 2003 Shergar Cup Distaff. He rode as stable jockey to Lambourn-based trainer Roy Kvisla for much of the 2006 season, partnering five winners in all including subsequent Caulfield Cup winner All The Good. He has also ridden in Hong Kong.
