We released our Oscars betting after the nominations were announced this week and it didn’t take long for the first gamble to take shape.
Avatar and The Hurt Locker are each up for nine awards and it’s the second of those films that has attracted the early money.
The Hurt Locker, in case you haven’t seen it or heard what it’s about, is an American war thriller set in Iraq and tells the story of a bomb disposal team. Sounds heavy going, doesn’t it?
But you don’t have to sit through the 131 minutes of the movie to win a few quid backing it to win the Best Picture category in the Oscars, and that’s what plenty of people have already set out to do.
Some clients with seriously good strike-rates in markets such as this have already got their money on The Hurt Locker and we have had to clip the odds to 11/8 from 6/4.
It looks to be a straight fight for the Best Picture gong between The Hurt Locker and Avatar, the sci-fi blockbuster which won the equivalent category at the recent Golden Globes.
Don’t read too much into that though…if the Oscars were just a repeat of the Golden Globes, why would there be such a fuss about them?
