The Arabian Racing Organisation holds approximately 15 race meetings a year from May to October at some of the top racecourses across the UK. Races are predominantly for Purebred Arabian horses, although there is also a series of races for Thoroughbreds and Anglo Arabs (a cross between an Arabian and a Thoroughbred).
The first Arab race meeting in Britain was held in 1978 at Hawthorn Hill, and today is a sport that holds a variety of races for amateurs (who often own, train and even ride the horses themselves) through to professionals.
The Dubai International Arabian Raceday, held at Newbury this year (20 July), is the ARO’s flagship meeting, now in its 26th year. With 4 Group races on the card and nearly £100,000 of prize money on offer, the meeting not only attracts runners from countries from Europe, the UAE, Qatar and Oman, but last year saw a record crowd of 16,500 racegoers. Some describe it as the 'Royal Ascot of Arab racing'.
ARO meetings are generally more informal than TB race meetings. For example there is a standard ticket price and only one enclosure for all racegoers.
