The Cheltenham Festival truly is the highlight of the horse racing jumps calendar, with thousands of punters and fans alike descending upon Cheltenham town over a space of 4 days to watch the very best quality horse racing.
Each of the four days provide drama, excitement and passion as top horses, jockeys and trainers from UK, Ireland and the rest of world vie for huge prize purses. The biggest races include The Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, The World Hurdle and the biggest of them all, The Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Gold Cup, taking place on the Friday is the highlight of the week and involves the cream of the crop in horse racing. This three mile and two Grade One is the most valuable non-handicap of the National Hunt, with the total prize money standing at a whopping £575,000.
Runners this year include last year’s champion Vatour, along with Don Cossack, trained by two of Ireland’s most successful trainers Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliot respectively and both are considered strong favourites to take the crown. In fact, the Gold Cup is dominated by the Irish this year, with Willie Mullins also entering Djakadam. Other entries include Cue Card, Silvio Conti and many others.
The winner of the Gold Cup goes down in racing folklore and will join the likes of Denman, Kauto Star, Dawn Run and Desert Orchid in the celebratory hall of fame. The race is steeped in history, but how good is your knowledge of the Cheltenham Gold Cup?
