Saturday 29th September – Newmarket – 3:00 – 6f (Row) Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) (Colts) (Class 1) (2yo)

The Middle Park Stakes was established in 1866 by William Blenkiron who was a very influential Yorkshire-born racehorse breeder in the 19th Century. The race which was originally open to both sexes is now open to two year old colts only. The race has been won by some very influential horses over the years including Bahram in 1934, Sun Chariot in 1941 and more recently Royal Applause in 1995.

The betting is not a great help in finding the winner of the Juddmonte Park with horses winning at 25/1 (twice), 22/1, 10/1 and 8/1 (twice) in the last 12 years.

However, horses who won on their last start require careful attention, with 10 of the last 12 winners achieving the feat and 11 of the last 12 winners had also run within 49 days of the race.

Six of the last 12 winners had run at Newmarket previously and all 12 had previously run over the race distance of 6 furlongs. Eleven of the last 12 winners had run at least three times prior to the race and 11 winners had also won at least twice earlier in the season.

Previous Group winning form is important with 10 of the last 12 winners winning at least once in a Group 1 to 3 race. An Official Rating of 105 or higher has been required to win the race in six of the last 12 renewals.

Emaraaty Ana comes into the race having won the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York on his last outing 36 days ago winning the 6 furlong event by half a length. The bay colt has winning form in the ground and is trained by Kevin Ryan who won the Middle Park Stakes in 2005 and 2013. With Aiden O’Brien- and John Gosden-trained runners in the race Emaraaty Ana could well go off at a decent each way price.
