At 1.10pm on Saturday 14th April, Bob Champion (wearing Aldaniti colours – kindly supplied by Nick Embiricos) and Jonjo O’Neill (wearing Don’t Push It colours – kindly supplied by JP McManus) will lead out the runners and riders for the second running of the John Smith’s Aintree Legends Charity Race.
These ‘legends’ have ridden over 14,200 winners between them and the race will be broadcast on the BBC:
- 1st Race – 1.10pm
- One mile five furlongs to be started by flag
- For horses of four-years-old and upwards who have run at least three times under the recognised Rules of Racing
- All horses to be rated 0–135 for hurdlers / steeplechasers, 0–90 for flat horses.
Bob Champion leads the team of Ambassadors for the race which include Jonjo O’Neill, Richard Dunwoody MBE, Mick Fitzgerald and Peter Scudamore MBE.
Bob Champion said: “Last year’s race was a memorable day and we were thrilled that 30 years on from my unbelievable win on Aldaniti (pictured), we managed to raise so much money for The Bob Champion Cancer Trust. This year we have another stellar line-up and I hope people enjoy the spectacle again and continue to support us to help reduce the odds against cancer.”
Adrian Maguire said: “I very much enjoyed watching Tony Dobbin winning the race last year and so am now very much looking forward to getting my chance back at Aintree, a track which has been very lucky for me in the past.”
Mick Kinane added: “I’m really looking forward to riding at Aintree for the first time, as long as they don’t put a fence in front of me!”
“It’s not often that you get a Cheltenham Festival winner running in a charity race but favourite American Trilogy took the County Hurdle back in 2009 and the combination of Paul Nicholls and Mick Kinane is one that is likely to prove irresistible to punters,” said George Primarolo from Betfred, Aintree’s official betting partner.
Totepool will be running a pool on this race on Saturday and all commission made on it will be donated to The Bob Champion Cancer Trust.
