Winter 2008: Good Grief it’s cold. And I’m sitting inside, wearing four layers, with the heating blasting and the fire roaring behind me. I can’t imagine how cold those jockeys are, dressed in next-to-nothing, and sitting high on the back of a horse, charging around in the cold. 

No wonder they make use of any opportunity available to them to keep warm. Did you know what the secret weapon of most jockeys is this time of the year? Ladies tights. Yup. Honestly. 

Commonly worn under jockeys’ jods as a super-lightweight layer to prevent chafing, the essential undies are a particular bonus during the winter months. And though they may not be necessarily worn for ‘body-shaping’ reasons, tights with gussets remove the need for pants – which, as well as helping with the weight on the scales, also avoids any problems with the dreaded VPL.
