Six times Champion Jumps Trainer, Paul Nicholls, 49, is just 10 wins away from training his 2,000th winner. The Somerset-based handler started his training career 20 years ago with only eight horses but was soon on the score sheet with his first winner, Olveston, at Hereford in December 1991.

He has a special 'countdown to 2,000 winners' tally on his website www.paulnichollsracing.com.

Prior to becoming a racehorse trainer, Paul was a successful jockey, riding 119 jump winners before injury brought a premature end to his career in the saddle.

Over the last two decades, Nicholls has won his owners nearly £23 million in prize-money, thanks to the achievements of, amongst others, Big Buck's, Kauto Star, Denman, Master Minded, Neptune Collonges, See More Business and Azertyuiop.

Perhaps, most famous of these is Kauto Star, the four times winner of the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, as well twice winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Paul's achievements don't end there. He's sent out 81 Grade One winners from his Manor Farm stables in Ditcheat and has been responsible for 30 Cheltenham Festival victories. However, two highly important races have eluded him, the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree and the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
